From a technological standpoint, cosmetic surgery is in its golden age
As the medical director of the Liposuction and Cosmetic Surgery Institute for parts of four decades, I have had the privilege of seeing countless new technologies infiltrate our industry, and I’ve seen these technologies increase the scope of procedures we offer while simultaneously improving the overall patient experience. I honestly never thought I’d see the cosmetic procedures we offer in our office today.
The changes are occurring so rapidly that just this January we introduced four new products that range from long term cellulite removal (Cellulaze), to an injection to remove wrinkles for at least two years (Voluma). When I started in this industry I did the bulk of my work in the operating room with surgical procedures. Now I use needles, lasers, radio frequency energy, ultrasound energy and even fancy new technologies like cryolipolysis (fat freezing). And in some cases, the results mirror those of surgery.
All this amazing research and technology has not only improved results and patient recovery time, but the price has also reduced tremendously. Thrity years ago I had one choice when it came to liposuction, now at our four facilities in Downtown Chicago, Oak Brook, Arlington Heights, and Naperville I have five different liposuction techniques at my disposal. Some of these procedures will remove a large number of fat cells in large areas, and others will remove fat and loose skin under your chin and around your neck area. After all my years of experience I am excited to go to work every day because now I have the ability to give my patients the technique that is customized to their idividual issues, as opposed to having one technique to fix everything. But this is still not the most exciting innovation.

Perhaps the most beneficial new aspect of the cosmetic surgery business for my patients is how affordable these procedures have become. There was a time when cosmetic surgery was reserved for only the wealthy. I think that has changed.
