Actress Renee Zellweger, famous for her roles in Jerry McGuire, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Chicago, was also well known for her distinct features. Her face was unrecognizable at a recent Hollywood event, which generated plenty of speculation about what procedures she had done, along with equal amount of headshaking by fans who did not recognize her. Her case brings up some interesting issues to consider if you are thinking about a cosmetic procedure. Despite the disapproval of her fans, Ms. Zellweger told the People Magazine that she is very happy with her appearance and attributes it to her new, more fulfilling life. Her personal satisfaction with her appearance is what is most important. However, plastic surgeons have weighed in on the changes and have offered some speculations about what work she really had done to correct the appearance of her eyes and wrinkles on her forehead.
What Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Changed Renee Zellweger’s Face?
Doctors around the world have speculated on what Jerry McGuire’s girl had done (or not), and it sounds like the list came from among most popular procedures we do here at the Institute. For example:
- Facelift – It was probably a mini facelift that gave her a more oval and feminine look (without an over-pulled, stiff appearance).
- Eyelid Surgery – Her familiar squinty eyes appear to contain less fat and the brows look a bit lower. She might have had surgery to remove excess skin from the upper eyelid (blepharoplasty) or a procedure to remove fat pads under the lower lids.
- Botox – Since her eyes look bigger and more of her eyelids are showing, in addition to the eyelid surgery, she possibly had Botox injections between her eyelid and eyes.
- Juvederm XC or Other Injections – To improve the quality of the skin and tissue, she might’ve had a nonsurgical procedure to tighten lesion fibers and stimulate collagen.
From what I can see, it sounds like the doctors approached this high profile procedure the same way I would have. Whether used on the upper or lower eyelid, blepharoplasty is the best procedure to remove extra fat and sagging skin that develops with aging. I evaluate a patient to see if they are good candidates for the scarless technique that works from inside the lower eyelid. If not, I make a small incision under the eyelashes that becomes invisible as it heals.
Many of our patients first try injections of Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Restylane, and/or Juvederm to see how they like the results. These gradual changes over time are all some people want, but even if they decide on surgery, they may supplement effects of the surgery with injections in other parts of the face.
