Hip Dip Surgery

Hip dips are inward curves that appear just below the hip bone on either side of the body. These indentations are medically referred to as trochanteric depressions. In casual contexts, they are referred to as violin hips and hip dents.

Hip dips occur naturally when the skin tightly adheres to the femur beneath the hip bone, creating a visible dip. The presence and prominence of hip dips are primarily determined by genetics.

While hip dips are not a medical concern, many individuals feel that hip dips disrupt the smooth lines of their silhouette. Past surgeries or overly aggressive fat removal from the thighs or hips can also exaggerate these natural indentations. Unfortunately, exercise and muscle building cannot fully eliminate hip dips. That is why many people turn to hip dip surgery–it’s a permanent solution.

What Is Hip Dip Surgery?

Hip dip surgery refers specifically to fat transfer, or fat grafting. This surgical procedure involves collecting fat from one area of the body. Injecting this fat builds volume and creates a more rounded, even contour. Typically, this fat is gathered from the abdomen, thighs, or flanks.

The fat is your own living tissue, making the procedure safe, natural, and biocompatible. The surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of fat harvesting and the patient’s comfort preferences.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Fat transfer for hip dip correction begins with gentle liposuction from areas with excess fat. Once collected, the fat is purified and prepared for reinjection. Your surgeon will then inject small amounts of fat into the hip dip area in carefully layered passes, sculpting your hips into a smoother, more proportionate shape.

Recovery from hip dip surgery generally takes several weeks. Compression garments may be recommended to support healing. Most patients can expect to return to light activities within a week. However, strenuous activities need to be avoided for 4-6 weeks.

The final results of hip dip surgery can take several months to become fully apparent. This is because it takes time for the transferred fat to settle and for swelling to subside.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Hip Dip Surgery?

Ideal candidates for hip dip surgery meet the following criteria:

  • Are in good health
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome
  • Have enough body fat to serve as a donor source for the transfer
  • Are at a stable weight

Non-smokers typically experience better healing, though smokers may still qualify if they’re willing to pause tobacco use during recovery.

Hip Dip Filler Surgery

Some patients researching options may come across the term “hip dip filler surgery.” While this can sound like a surgical procedure, it typically refers to non-surgical injectable treatments like Sculptra or Radiesse. These fillers offer temporary volume restoration and are often chosen by individuals who want a non-invasive alternative to fat transfer. However, they do not produce the same long-lasting, natural results as a fat grafting procedure.

Still, hip dip filler surgery is the best option for some patients.  If you’re not sure which option is better for you, schedule a consultation with us. We will evaluate your goals and body composition to determine the best path to the results you desire.
