Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to refine and reshape the nose. This procedure is used for both cosmetic purposes and rectifying nasal obstruction, asymmetry, and septal deviations.
Cosmetic Purposes
Rhinoplasty surgery, also called a nose job, is designed to change the appearance of the nose and create a more aesthetically appealing shape. Many individuals opt for minor changes and adjustments, such as refining the tip of the nose or contouring the bridge. Other clients opt for more extensive surgeries that significantly alter their nose’s natural size and shape.
Correcting Physical Abnormalities
Individuals who experience breathing difficulties due to nasal abnormalities or injuries may opt for rhinoplasty in order to improve these issues. Chronic inflammation caused by allergies may also be improved with surgical intervention. Rhinoplasty can be used to treat issues such as nasal polyps, deviated septum, or turbinate hypertrophy, all of which can contribute to the worsening of allergy symptoms.
What Does the Procedure Entail?
Rhinoplasty is customized to each patient. The nose is composed of cartilage, bone, and soft tissue. Any of these can be trimmed or otherwise altered to improve the shape of the nose. Therefore, a rhinoplasty procedure can be as minor or extensive as necessary to achieve a client’s desired results.
A nose job can fix the following functional and cosmetic issues:
- Asymmetry/Crooked Nose
- Disproportionately Sized Nose
- Deviated Septum
- Low, Hanging Nasal Tip
- Nasal Polyps
- Disproportionately Sized or Asymmetrical Nostrils
- Hump on Nasal Bridge
- And More
The first step of a rhinoplasty procedure entails peeling back the skin to get to the nasal structures beneath. From there, your cosmetic surgeon will begin removing or restructuring tissue and bone to create a more refined shape and appearance.
Incisions are small and placed in areas that generally cannot be seen, such as beneath the nose, where the scar is virtually unnoticeable once fully healed.
Good Candidates
Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose, or have breathing difficulties that may be improved with surgery.
Some issues commonly faced by candidates for rhinoplasty include a drooping nasal tip, deviated septum, asymmetry, a nose that is too large in comparison to the rest of the facial features, etc.
Recovery
Recovery from rhinoplasty looks different on everyone. Most bruising subsides within 7-10 days. The final results can start to be seen after swelling begins to decrease; however, it can take up to a year for the nose to fully heal after surgery. Most patients get a good idea of what their new nose will look like soon after the procedure, usually within the first 3 months.
Strenuous exercise or physical activity should be avoided for at least 4 weeks post surgery. Smoking and aspirin should be avoided entirely during the recovery period. Sun exposure to the face should also be avoided for at least 8 weeks, since new skin tissue is very susceptible to sun damage and scars can become more prominent.
Results
Noticeable results can be seen immediately after the procedure, however, it may take up to a year to see the final results. This is because swelling can take anywhere from 6-12 months to fully subside.
Other Procedures
Other procedures that can be used to make minor adjustments to the shape of the nose include:
- Nose PDO Thread Lift
- Botox
- Dermal Fillers (such as Radiesse and Juvederm)
- Laser Treatment (Can be used to tighten the skin of the nose and nearby areas.)
Rhinoplasty may be used in place of or in conjunction with some of the above treatments. However, it’s necessary for your nose to fully heal after surgery before you undergo any additional procedures.
For individuals interested in other facial plastic surgery procedures, rhinoplasty may be one of several options utilized to change the overall appearance of the face.
